I believe we’re wired for growth. It’s in our circuitry to evolve and expand in terms of consciousness and knowledge. Certain systems would say its one of our “spiritual” needs. Another spiritual need is contribution, giving back or giving away.
Because we’re wired for growth there’s an energy or fire deep inside that drives us. Do you know what I’m talking about? That urge in your gut, your spirit or in your soul.
How much time do you spend thinking about your soul’s deepest longing? Not much probably. Like many, you’re busy, you have stuff to do, places to be, kids to raise and raise well. And that urge deep inside ends up being a bother. It gets misplaced and without proper managing we decide it best to shut it down so it doesn’t drive us all to madness.
Don’t worry, we all end up here. Just don’t plan on staying, book a round trip ticket back from complacency.
The most common of the negative, unhealthy solutions I see to silencing the roar of that urge is accumulation. Amassing anything seems to satiate that spiritual need temporarily, especially when society tells you you’re not shit or don’t belong if you don’t have a bunch of stuff anyway. Welcome, shame…again. And separation…and hierarchy and your story and all that stuff that keeps you from living out the real reason you’re here in the world, to give your gift to the world and be who you are at your core.
Amassing or accumulating anything in a dysfunctional way just prolongs the agony. One of my old aphorism arises here again; short term comfort that creates eventual self destruction.
So…slow down, listen to the sensations in your body and build a relationship with your soul. Maybe do this by mediating? Learn about your connection to what you’ve made god to greater and greater depth.
